Mechanism: Licorice and its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulation effects

Licorice has been used in herbal medicine for hundreds of years.

Licorice is a common ingredient in several traditional medicines like Ayurveda & Chinese medicine for treatment of many diseases, including inflammations and immunological disorders. It has been proven to inhibit infection of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV).

Studies by Fu et al suggest that the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulation activities of liquorice are due to its active component, glycyrretinic acid (GA). They suggest a potential mechnism for these positive health effects.

Their results suggest that GA blocks Kv1.3 channels, which probably helps to explain its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulation effects.
